5 Benefits of Contrast Therapy: Why Hot-Then-Cold Works

Cold plunge tubs at Löyly Nordic Spa

Contrast therapy is a simple idea with a long history: heat the body thoroughly in a sauna, then cool it rapidly in cold water, rest, and repeat. Nordic cultures have done it for centuries between sauna sessions and frozen lakes. You don't need a frozen lake. You need a hot room with good löyly and a clean, cold tub, and the discipline to get in.

1. Muscle recovery you can feel

Athletes gravitated to contrast therapy long before the research caught up. Heat increases blood flow to muscles; cold constricts it; alternating the two acts like a pump for circulation. Many people find sore muscles bounce back noticeably faster after a few hot-cold rounds, which is why you'll see everyone from climbers to marathoners cycling between our benches and plunges.

2. A hard reset for stress

There is no multitasking in a 41-degree tub. Cold immersion forces your full attention into the present moment and your breath, and the calm that follows when you step out is hard to describe until you've felt it. The sauna's deep heat works the other direction, unwinding physical tension. Together they bracket your nervous system from both ends.

3. The post-plunge lift

Ask anyone walking out of a cold plunge how they feel. Cold exposure triggers a surge of alertness, and most regulars describe a clear, energized mood that lasts for hours. It's the cheapest legal high in Utah, and it comes with a towel.

4. Better wind-down, better sleep

A long sauna session in the evening, finished with a cool rinse, mirrors the natural drop in body temperature that signals sleep. Many of our members treat an evening session as their wind-down ritual, and it's a big reason we stay open until 9 or 10 pm most nights.

5. A ritual you'll actually keep

The biggest benefit is the one that compounds: contrast therapy feels good enough that you keep showing up. That's the entire philosophy behind Löyly, and it's why we removed every barrier we could think of. No appointments. No time limits. Unlimited visits on every membership. The easier the ritual, the longer you keep it.

How to do a contrast round at Löyly

Shower first. Sit in the sauna 10–20 minutes, until you're warmed through. Rinse, then step into a cold plunge for 30 seconds to a few minutes, whatever the day calls for. We keep twelve individual plunges at four temperatures: 41°F, 46°F, 51°F, and 56°F, so you can start warm-ish and work your way down over the weeks. Rest until your breathing settles, then go again. Two to four rounds is a typical session, but there's no wrong way to do it.
