General Information
What is a Nordic spa?
A Nordic spa is a wellness retreat that follows the traditional Scandinavian practice of hot and cold therapy, combining saunas, cold plunges, and relaxation areas to promote relaxation, circulation, and overall well-being.
Where are you located?
Three locations:
- Orem: 564 E Park Ave, Orem, UT 84097, next to University Place. Free parking.
- Downtown SLC: 336 W Broadway, Salt Lake City, UT 84101. Parking garage under the space and street parking as available.
- Fort Union: 7198 S Union Park Ave, Midvale, UT 84047. Located directly north of the Momentum Climbing Gym and Dick's Sporting Goods at the Shops at Fort Union on the back side of Image Studios. Parking in front.
Do I need to make a reservation?
No reservations are required to visit Löyly Nordic Spa.
What should I bring?
We recommend bringing a bathing suit, sandals, and a reusable water bottle. Towels are available for rent, but you're welcome to bring your own.
Is there a minimum age requirement?
Yes, guests must be at least 16 years old to use our facilities. Guests ages 12-15 may also participate with parent supervision.
Can I pay with my HSA/FSA?
Save an average of 30% on your Löyly Nordic Spa membership this year by using your HSA/FSA to reimburse your membership fees.
Water Quality
Do you use chlorine in the cold plunges?
No. No chlorine, no bromine. Every plunge runs its own three-stage system: UV-C sanitation to eliminate bacteria, automated ozone injection for purification, and a 50-micron filter that captures skin oils and debris. All three cycle continuously.
Why does that matter if the sauna is a separate room?
Because the water travels with you. Chemically treated water comes out of the tub on your suit and on your skin, and sauna heat vaporizes those compounds so everyone in the room inhales them. Separate rooms don't prevent it. Not putting chemicals in the water does.
How often is the water changed?
Daily, and more often on high-usage tubs. Most facilities stretch a water change as far as they can and use a chemical shock to clear it back up when it starts to turn. We don't have that option, because we don't use chlorine or bromine. So we change the water instead. What you're looking at is clean water, not treated water.
Is ozone safe?
Yes. Dissolved ozone is a widely used water purification method. It oxidizes contaminants and then reverts to oxygen, leaving no chemical residual in the water or on your skin. It is unrelated to atmospheric ozone as an air quality concern.
Are the cold plunges shared?
No. We have individual plunges at multiple temperatures, each with its own filtration and sanitation system. You're not sharing water with anyone, and you're not waiting on an appointment to use one.
What temperature are the cold plunges?
41°F, 46°F, 51°F, and 56°F. Twelve individual tubs, so you pick the temperature that fits the day rather than taking whatever the single communal tub happens to be set at.
Spa Experience
I've never done this before. What do I actually do?
Shower first. Sit in the sauna until you're warmed through, usually 10 to 20 minutes. Step out, rinse, and get into a cold plunge for anywhere from 30 seconds to a few minutes. Rest until your breathing settles. Repeat as many times as you like. There is no wrong way to do it and no schedule to keep. Ask anyone at the front desk and they'll walk you through it.
How hot is the sauna?
This is the wrong question to ask. You should be asking how the löyly is. The löyly is the defining characteristic of a proper Finnish sauna where the steam from the stones is abundant from head to toe, the heat is even (no cold feet!), and there is proper airflow so you don't get dizzy or light headed from lack of fresh air. But to answer this directly, we like to keep our sauna around 190-200°F, which will vary from time to time depending on how often water is poured on the heaters lowering temperature but raising humidity and softening the heat when done properly.
Can I pour water on the stones?
Yes. Please do. That is löyly, and it is the entire point.
Do you have a silent sauna?
Yes. We have both a social sauna and a silent sauna, so you can pick your mood. The social sauna is conversational by design. The silent sauna is meant to be for deep meditation and no conversations are allowed, and we enforce it. If it isn't, tell the front desk and we'll handle it.
Why do I need to shower first?
Two reasons. Hygiene, and comfort. Water on your skin acts as a thermal barrier, so a rinse before you sit makes the bench noticeably more comfortable at high heat.
Is it barefoot?
Barefoot is the norm in a bathhouse, and that's how most of our guests move through the space. Clean sandals are always welcome if you'd prefer them. Either is fine.
Do you have showers and changing rooms?
Yes. Changing rooms, lockers, showers, and rinse stations at every location.
Do I have to book a time?
No. No reservations, no appointments, no time limits. Walk in during operating hours and stay as long as you want.
How long can I stay?
You're welcome to stay as long as you'd like within our operating hours.
Do you provide sauna mats?
Yes, as is custom in Finland. Grab one on your way in.
Health and Safety
Can I visit if I'm pregnant or have a medical condition?
If you are pregnant or have any medical conditions (such as heart issues or high blood pressure), we recommend consulting your doctor before using the sauna or cold plunge.
Is the spa co-ed?
Yes, our facilities are co-ed, and swimwear is required at all times.
What are the hygiene protocols?
We follow strict cleaning and sanitization procedures, and we ask every guest to shower before entering a sauna or plunge. Our cold plunge water is changed daily and filtered continuously without chlorine or bromine. See the Water Quality section above.
